Description

Neuroterus anthracinus is a gall wasp inducing galls on various oak species (Quercus spp.). It has a complex life cycle, with two distinct generations: the agamic (asexual) generation, which develops in the oyster gall on leaves, and the sexual generation, which forms the April-bud gall on buds. The species is widespread across Europe and thrives in both natural and managed oak forests. The oyster gall appears in late summer, while the April-bud gall develops in early spring. Though the damage is mostly aesthetic, high gall densities can lead to early leaf drop and reduced tree vitality.

Symptom

Oyster galls are small, bean-shaped structures forming on the underside of oak leaves, often with two flap-like extensions. April-bud galls are oval, light-colored swellings within terminal buds, typically emerging in early spring.
