Description
The female lays eggs on pine needles in rows, 5-20 in number. The eggs do not touch each other. They overwinter on the needles. Larvae hatch in April and in May, they are yellowish green, with indistinct longitudinal lighter stripes. The head is black. The European pine sawfly occurs in warmer regions damaging Pinus sylvestris and, to a smaller degree, Pinus nigra too. The pest is found also in dwarf pine stands on the timberline, where larvae hatch in June. Needles on sprouts, especially on the older ones are damaged, only teasels of young needles remain at the ends of twigs. It pupates in the crown.
