Mycosphaerella pini

Red band needle blight

Description

The infection of needles occurs from early May until the end of September. The first symptoms present pale yellow to brown stains reminding of wounds after insect sucking. In November, the infected needles are already brown and by the end of December, on brown needles appear brick-red stains and even transverse stripes. Pycnidia are black lumps breaking in on epidermis, since spring conidia have been formed in them. The asexual stage of the fungus is Dothistroma septosporum, in Cenral Europe it is more often formed stage. The infestation can by strong. The pathogen is known from warmer, southern part of Central Europe.

Symptom

Symptoms usually develop in the centre of the lower crown. The first symptoms are light green bands occurring on young needles, spreading over the whole needle, turning yellow and eventually grey-brown.
