Beach gall midge

Description

A tiny fly, only 4-5 mm long. Its larva (about 3-4 mm long) develops inside cylindrical gall formed on beech leaves since the beginning of spring. The gall has a typical barrel-like shape. It is green, yellow, often with red blending. It always occurs on the upper side of leaves. The size of the gall is about 5 - 10 mm. On one leaf may occur several galls.
