Melasoma populi
Poplar leaf beetle
Description
It is the most significant defoliator of poplar nurseries and plantations. The adults (A) hibernate beneath fallen leaves at the bases of trees or under bark. They are striking; red, about 1 cm long. They emerge from late April to early May and can be found on poplar leaves or occasionally also on willow. They lay orange eggs on leaves (B). It has several similar related species with which it can be easily confused. White and black larvae (C–E) also live on leaves (first mainly on the lower side) and the damage they do is equal to that of the adults. Perforated leaves are typical evidence of the larvae.
Symptom
Red beetle on leaves.
