Melampsoridium hiratsukanum
Alder rust
Description
Numerous tiny luteofulvous lumps on the bottom side of leaves are uredia (fruiting bodies) with urediospores. On the upper side of leaves there are purple to brown spots. Attacked leaves get brown and are shed prematurely. The rust is dioecious. Spermogonia and aecidia are formed on larch needles, uredia and telia on leaves of various species of the alders. In the places where larch does not occur, the whole rust life cycle can go along only on alders. The fungus is relatively rare and does not cause any serious damage. As the rust overwinters on alder leaves, a protective measure is raking up and burning those leaves.

Tiny orange lumps on the underside of the leaf.
