Magdalis memnonia

Weevil Magdalis memnonia

Description

Magdalis memnonia is a small beetle belonging to the family Curculionidae. It primarily targets coniferous trees, particularly various Pinus species and occasionally Picea (spruce) and Abies (fir). The adult beetles feed on the needles, causing locally significant damage. This behavior weakens the host tree, making it more susceptible to secondary infestations and environmental stressors. Native to Europe, Magdalis memnonia is found across several countries, but its populations can vary depending on local forest management practices and climate conditions. It is more abundant in warmer regions of Europe. Although the beetle itself rarely causes tree death, the damage to twigs and needles can reduce the overall health and growth of affected conifers, especially in cases of large infestations.

Symptom

Needle damage, with visible feeding marks and occasional branch dieback. Needles are often chewed along the sides, sometimes partially brown or entirely missing. Black adults may sometimes be found among the needles.
