Laothoe populi

Poplar hawk-moth

Description

Laothoe populi, the poplar hawk-moth, is a large nocturnal moth from the family Sphingidae, widely distributed across Europe. Adults fly from May to September and produce one or two generations annually. They do not feed as adults and rely entirely on energy reserves from the larval stage. The caterpillars feed mainly on poplars (Populus spp.), and occasionally on willows, birches, and ashes. Before pupation, the caterpillars move to the base of the host tree and burrow into the soil. This species rarely causes serious damage, but leaf feeding by larvae may temporarily reduce the visual quality of young ornamental trees.
