Kuehneola uredinis
Pale bramble rust
Description
Kuehneola uredinis (Pale bramble rust) is a rust fungus affecting blackberries (Rubus fruticosus agg.) and related brambles. It completes its life cycle on the same host, overwintering on infected shoots and leaf litter. In spring, spermogonia and aecia appear as yellow warts on the upper surface of leaves, followed by uredinia on the underside and sometimes on stems and petioles. Telia are rare. The species is widespread in Europe, particularly in moist habitats. Infections can lead to premature leaf fall and reduced ornamental value of shrubs; in severe cases they may weaken plants, although the harmfulness is usually moderate.
Symptom
Yellow warts on the upper side of leaves, later orange uredinia on the underside; dark pustules may develop and affected leaves can fall prematurely.
