Description

Kermes vermilio is a scale insect belonging to the family Kermesidae, which primarily infests oak trees (Quercus spp.). Females attach to branches and form globular, dark red to brown protective coverings with a fine wax layer. The species has a monophagous preference for oaks, particularly Quercus coccifera, Q. ilex, Q. rotundifolia, and Q. suber. It is found in Mediterranean regions of Europe. The insects feed by sucking sap from the branches, which may weaken the host tree. In high densities, they can contribute to branch dieback and reduce the tree’s overall vitality and aesthetic value.

Symptom

On infested trees, round, red to brown scale formations are visible on branches, often clustered together. These scales are approximately 5 mm in size and covered with a fine waxy layer. Severely affected branches may show signs of weakening or drying.
