Description

Kermes ilicis is a scale insect in the family Kermesidae, monophagous on oak species of the genus Quercus, including holm oak (Quercus ilex), cork oak (Quercus suber), and kermes oak (Quercus coccifera). The species is distributed in Southern Europe and Mediterranean regions. It primarily inhabits branches, where females form small, round, brownish protective structures. The life cycle is annual, with eggs laid under the female's body, and nymphs dispersing to attach to new branches.

Infestations can weaken the tree's vitality by extracting sap, particularly on younger branches. Aesthetic damage is also evident, as the scales resemble small galls or pockmarks on infested branches, which may appear discolored or distorted.
