Inonotus nidus-pici

Inonotus canker Inonotus nidus-pici

Description

Sexual fruiting bodies grow annually on the wall of the hollow inside a tree. They are effused and appear as yellowish-green to olive pores when fresh and brown when dry. Asexual fruiting bodies are formed annually on the bark surface, appearing as ball-shaped, yellowish-brown structures when young, frequently with brown water drops on the surface. Later, they become black and hard. Fruiting bodies remaining from the previous year are covered with a whitish dust of chlamydospores. The mycelium of the fungus causes heartwood white rot.

Symptom

Infected trees may show signs of bark cracks, yellowing leaves, dieback of branches, and the presence of large, woody fruiting bodies on the trunk or branches. The fungus can cause structural weakness, making the tree more susceptible to wind or storm damage.
