Impatiens parviflora
Small balsam
Description
Small balsam or small-flowered nettle is an annual herb growing to a height of 30-60 cm. It has an upright, branched stem in the upper part. The leaves are short-stalked, alternate, and ovate to oblong, serrated at the edges. The flowers grow on long stalks from the axils of the upper leaves and are grouped by 3-10 in an elongated raceme. They are small (approx. 15 mm long) and inconspicuous, their colour is yellow-green, on the inside they have several red spots on a darker yellow background. The plant blooms from June to September. The fruit is an elongated club-shaped bare capsule. It reproduces by seeds, which are shot from mature pods into the surroundings, often even at greater distances from the plants.Currently, it is spread over many areas in Europe, with the exception of higher mountain areas. It grows mainly in deciduous forests, where dense stands under trees, on forest edges, in thickets, near waterways, roads and railways. Moist and shaded places and humus soils containing nitrogen and also richer in minerals suit it. It often creates large stands of plants that suppress and crowd out the original herbaceous vegetation and at the same time replace it.
