Hypoxylon fragiforme

Hypoxylon canker

Description

The fungus is common on bark of freshly felled trees and branches(A). It causes white rot, however, it does not penetrate deeply into wood. On rotting wood there are thin black lines formed to delimit healthy and rotting wood. About 1 cm long globular fruiting bodies grow in groups on bark. They are reddish brown, inside black and with its solidity they remind of charcoal. The older fruiting bodies are often striking as bark around them is covered with the black powder from spores.

Symptom

Orange to black-brown bumps about 0.2-1 cm large on the trunk, mostly in large numbers.
