Hoplocampoides xylostei
Sawfly Hoplocampoides xylostei
Description
Hoplocampoides xylostei = (Hoplocampa xylostei) is a sawfly species that primarily infests honeysuckles (Lonicera spp.), particularly Lonicera xylosteum (fly honeysuckle), Lonicera nigra, and Lonicera caerulea. This monophagous insect is distributed across Europe, thriving in temperate regions. The lifecycle includes one generation per year. Larvae feed on developing tissues within young shoots, causing significant localized damage. Pupation occurs in the soil, where the larvae overwinter.
The damage caused by Hoplocampa xylostei is primarily aesthetic, reducing the ornamental value of host plants by deforming young shoots and leaves. In cases of high infestation intensity, growth is stunted, and the vitality of affected plants can be moderately impacted.
Symptom
Young shoots swell into fleshy, often reddish galls. Inside, white larvae can be found. Severely infested shoots appear deformed and may wither.
