Heracleum mantagazzianum
Giant Hogweed
Description
In Slovakia and many other countries of the Northern Hemisphere, it is considered a particularly dangerous species that is capable of destroying the original ecosystems in the given territory. In addition, it can endanger human health because it contains various phototoxic substances that cause severe burns and headaches in humans. Giant Hogweed is a plant of impressive growth, in Central European conditions it grows from 2 m, sometimes up to 5 m in height. It is a two- to several-year-old plant, which germinates from the seed in the first year, usually already in mid-February, produces only leaves and collects reserves in a massive root. Hogweed populates almost all positions. It spreads along roads and waterways. Usually, it first dominates the poorer habitats, where the herbs present cannot compete with it, and with the support of the foci created in this way, it then begins to spread to moist and nutrient-rich positions in the vicinity, from where it gradually displaces competitively strong herbs. He takes advantage of the fact that his seeds germinate very early in the spring, quickly outgrow most plants and create a cover that gives him a great advantage. Over time, a continuous growth will usually form, which can absorb 80% of all sunlight and completely prevent other plants from growing.
