Gilletteella cooleyi
Douglas fir woolly aphid
Description
It is the best-known pest of Pseudotsuga menziesii. The larvae overwinter on needles. In spring they start to produce small cotton wool-like wads, with which the needles are literally studded. In May, they lay about 300 eggs under the cotton wool-like wad, from which a new generation hatches. One part of the progeny goes onto the trunk, the other part sucks on young needles which can be seriously damaged. At the place of sucking arises a small yellow spot, the needles turn yellow and fall.
Symptom
In spring larvae start to produce small cotton wool-like wax.
