Description

Gastrodes abietum, known as the spruce cone bug, is a small bug that primarily inhabits coniferous trees of the family Pinaceae, particularly Picea abies (Norway spruce) and Abies alba (silver fir). It occasionally utilizes other hosts, such as Larix decidua (European larch) and Pinus species. This oligophagous species is widely distributed across Europe, from the Mediterranean to the polar regions, and extends eastward to Siberia. It thrives in montane forests and occasionally in lower altitudes.

The larvae and adults feed by sucking on the seeds inside cones. Damage caused by this feeding weakens the reproductive capacity of affected trees, although it does not directly impact their vitality. Aesthetic damage to cones may also reduce their ornamental value in managed settings or forestry seed collections. This species overwinters as adult inside cones, offering protection during colder months.

Symptom

Infested cones show feeding marks inside, with seeds often shriveled or hollowed. Larvae and adults reside within mature or fallen cones, which may appear dried or partially damaged.
