Erysiphe platani

Plane tree powdery mildew

Description

Erysiphe platani is a species of fungus commonly known as the plane tree powdery mildew or sycamore powdery mildew. As with other powdery mildews, it forms characteristic white, powdery colonies on the surfaces of host plant parts, composed of asexual spores called conidia. Erysiphe platani primarily targets plane trees (Platanus spp.), which are deciduous trees commonly found in temperate regions. It has been reported in various countries across Europe, Asia, and North America, where plane trees are grown as ornamental shade trees along streets and in parks. Powdery mildew caused by Erysiphe platani is generally considered a cosmetic rather than a severe health issue for the host tree. Infected leaves may experience reduced photosynthetic efficiency, but it rarely leads to tree mortality. However, severe and recurrent infections could weaken the tree\'s overall health, making it more susceptible to other stresses and diseases. The fungus overwinters in dormant buds and emerges during the growing season. As the temperature and humidity increase, the pathogen releases conidia, which are easily dispersed by wind to infect new leaves. The fungus then reproduces asexually, forming more conidia, which can lead to rapid disease spread under favorable conditions. Some plane tree varieties are more resistant to the disease and can be chosen to minimize its impact. Erysiphe platani is a North American species, non native to Europe.
