Description

The gall produced by Eriosoma lanuginosum, commonly known as the elm balloon-gall aphid, is a protective structure that develops on elm leaves as a result of the aphid\'s feeding activities. The gall is formed by a combination of the tree\'s reaction to the aphid\'s feeding and the aphid\'s secretion of chemicals that induce gall formation. The gall is large, bladder like, sometimes reaching 4-5 cm in diameter and is typically round or oval-shaped. The gall tissue is light green at first and covered with fine white hairs, but becomes brown and hard as the gall matures. Eriosoma lanuginosum can be found on various elm species.
