Elateridae
Click beetles
Description
The beetles are 0.5-1.3 cm long, mostly black or brown. If an adult is turned over onto its back, it returns to its original position by a peculiar motion (hurling itself using a massive movable shield) accompanied by a sound effect. Their larvae - wireworms - damage plant roots. They have a strongly chitinous body surface which feels like a wire. They are especially dangerous in forest tree and ornamental tree nurseries, where they can cause root damage and subsequent death of the seedlings. The commonest species are Adelocera murina, Selatosomus aeneus, Athous zebei and Hemicrepidius niger.
