Description

This member of the bark beetle family colonizes thicker trunk sections of dying trees. Primarily, however, it prefers felled or broken trunks lying on moist ground and often inhabits stumps, too. The adult is a brown beetle, 3-4 mm long. Larvae excavate gallery, which is normally single-branched, with larval tunnels on both sides. In case of massive attack the feeding galleries are intersected. Its more common in higher altitudes. The relative species Dryocoetes hectographus can also be found on Norway spruce.
