Diplolepis mayri

Gall wasp Diplolepis mayri

Description

Diplolepis mayri is a gall-inducing wasp from the family Cynipidae that targets wild roses (Rosa spp.) in the Western Palaearctic. Though less common than its relative, bedeguar gall wasp Diplolepis rosae, it forms distinctive galls that resemble bedeguar gall wasp gall, but with fewer, more spine-like and shorter outgrows. These galls can appear on the buds or undersides of leaves and typically grows into an irregular mass up to 5 cm in size. Initially green and juicy, they turn brown and harden as they mature. Inside the gall lives larvae. Popation takes place in the gall too. The species is monophagous, feeding exclusively on plants from the Rosaceae family.
