Description

Dioryctria mendacella, commonly known as the pine cone moth, is a significant pest affecting Mediterranean pines, especially stone pine (Pinus pinea). The larvae primarily attack cones, boring into them and causing deformations, abnormal growth, and cone abortion, which results in significant seed loss. This moth is widespread in southern Europe, particularly in Portugal, Spain, and other Mediterranean countries. The life cycle includes at least two generations annually, with females laying eggs on the cones. Larvae can also attack pine shoots, causing shoot dieback and wilting.

Symptom

Damage includes resin exudation, wilting, and drying of affected pine shoots, along with the presence of small oval emergence holes. Cone attacks cause deformations and seed loss.
