Dendrocopos spp.

Woodpeckers

Description

This phenomenon has long been known and is referred to in forestry terminology as the ringing of trees by woodpeckers. Holes (usually 4 - 6) are cut horizontally on healthy trees, from which sap often flows out in the spring. We have observed such behavior in a large number of Dendrocopos major and environmental woodpecker Dendrocoptes medius, but it is likely that other species of woodpecker behave similarly. The reason for this behavior is not completely known. It is believed that the flowing juice from the clover needs as a dietary supplement in the spring, but there are other explanations. Such a damaged tree usually does not die and the wounds heal later in the season. We observed ringing on the count, birch, hazel and some other woody plants.
