White pine blister rust

Description

The symptoms of blister rust infection on white pines include local bark swelling, intense resin production and orange-yellow pad-like aecidia penetrating the bark in the place of thickened twigs and trunk. Trees under 25 years of growth are predisposed to being infected, in particular. The fungus spreads around the trunk, it rounds it and the part of the tree above it turns yellow, withers and dies back. An intermediate host of the fungus are black currants and gooseberry bushes. Preventive measures against the fungus include removal of the black currants and gooseberry bushes from an area at least 500 m around Weymouth pines.
