Cladius grandis (=Trichiocampus viminalis)

Poplar sawfly

Description

Cladius grandis, commonly known as the poplar sawfly, is an insect that primarily feeds on poplars and willows. The orange larvae cause significant poplar leaf damage by initially skeletonizing the underside of the leaves before moving to the edges, later on larvae consume the complete tissue. Eggs are laid in a row on leaf petioles, and the larvae feed gregariously. They eventually cocoon in bark crevices or in the soil. This species is widespread across Europe. The poplar damages caused by this species can be quite extensive, affecting the health and appearance of the trees. Adults fly from May and August. It may have two broods.
