Cicadellidae

Leafhoppers on maple

Description

Several leafhopper species, such as Edwardsiana nigriloba, Ossiannilssonola callosa and Fagocyba cruenta, develop on maples (Acer spp.) in Europe. Adults are 2–4 mm long, light-coloured, with wings held roof-like over the body, and they jump quickly when disturbed. Nymphs resemble adults and pass through five immature stages. The species usually overwinter as eggs inserted into host tissue, and adults appear from early summer. Leafhoppers are widely distributed across Europe, including both lowlands and mountain regions. Infestation intensity is usually not strong, but high numbers may reduce leaf assimilation area, which can worsen the overall vitality and ornamental value of maples.

Symptom

On the upper leaf surface are many small whitish punctures; on the underside are nymphs, adults and white exuviae.
