Ciboria batschiana
Ciboria fungus
Description
The ciberia fungus is a cause of black rot of acorns which can often destroy the whole sowing in seedbeds. The fungus develops in wet and cold weather conditions. It infects the acorns on the ground through ascospores that are formed on fruiting bodies in autumn. In the course of the year, black spots are formed on the surface of acorns. The inner seed is cinnamon-brown, porous, later on black and mummified. In the following autumn, cinnamon-brown fruiting bodies with a disc diameter of 0.5-2.0 cm are formed on the mummified seeds. It is necessary to harvest the seeds as soon as possible, or to treat them by soaking in water (38°C) for 24 hours.
