Chrysomelidae

Leaf beetles on raspberries

Description

The Chrysomelidae, commonly known as leaf beetles, are a large group of generally smaller beetles with metallic, robust bodies. They are often very similar in appearance, which can make their exact identification down to species level quite challenging. Both their larvae and adults feed on plant tissues, particularly on the leaves of host plants. Many species are polyphagous, meaning they can live on various trees and shrubs. Aside from economically significant species, there is limited information on their host plants, and the data that does exist is often incomplete or inaccurate.

Symptom

In the second half of summer, small spots appear on the leaves, which later merge together. Occasionally, holes are present in the leaves. Visible feeding damage can be observed on the surface of the leaves. Sometimes small, shiny beetles with stout bodies can be found on the leaves. The damage can be very intense.
