Chilaspis nitida

Gall wasp Chilaspis nitida

Description

Unisexual generation forms monolocular, pale green globular galls 4-6 mm in diameter on the under side of leaves, usually gregariously. They fall down in October, when they are dry and grey-brown in colour. The bisexual generation forms a globular purple cotton wool-like mass, 10-30 mm across, within which can be found a variable number of hard inner cells, each 2-3 mm long. This generation completes its development by the end of May. Later the galls dry and disintegrate. Both generations live exclusively on Quercus cerris. Often very abundant.
