Cetoniinae

Flower chafers Cetoniinae

Description

Beetles belonging to the subfamily Cetoniinae (Family Scarabaeidae) have been known to cause damage to apple fruits and other fruits in Europe. These beetles typically feed on the surface of the fruits, creating shallow, irregularly shaped pits or cavities. Sometime whole fruit can be consumed. The feeding activity of Cetoniinae beetles can result in cosmetic damage to the fruits, making them less visually appealing for consumers. Additionally, the feeding places may provide entry points for pathogens, leading to potential fruit rot or fungal infections. The severity of the damage caused by Cetoniinae beetles can vary depending on factors such as the population size of the beetles, fruit susceptibility, and environmental conditions. The rose chafer Cetonia aurata is a widespread and economically significant pest in Europe. However also other species can cause damages to the fruits, like Potosia spp., Cetonischema spp. etc. They feed on a variety of plants, including roses, fruits, and ornamental flowers. The larvae are not harmful. They live in decaying wood.
