Cercospora moricola
Mulberry leaf spot
Description
Cercospora moricola is a fungal pathogen causing leaf spot disease on mulberry trees (Morus spp.), especially in warm and humid regions. The fungus attacks primarily the leaf blade and petiole, where it forms small necrotic spots. These lesions begin as brown patches with pale centers and yellowish margins – they can expand, merge, and form irregular or rectangular necrotic areas. Heavy infections may accelerate leaf senescence and reduce photosynthetic activity. The disease occurs predominantly from summer to late autumn and spreads via conidia splashed by rain. The host range is limited mainly to mulberry trees in the Moraceae family.
Symptom
Small dark brown to black spots on leaves with pale centers and yellowish margins, which may merge into larger necrotic areas.
