Caliroa annulipes

Oak slug sawfly

Description

Slug-shaped larvae that lack prolegs feed on one side of the leaf, scraping off epidermis but leaving veins and one cuticle (windowpaning). Can lead to increment loss and esthetic damage. InEurope two generations per year occurs. Short-lived adults (4-6 mm) fly May-June and August, respectively. Eggs are deposited in pouches cut into the lower leaf surface. Larvae are present from July to September. Develop through five feeding instars and one eonymph stage. Pupation in cocoons in the soil; extended diapause is possible. Sometimes conspicuous in open areas on park and shade trees.
