Bruchidius siliquastri

Redbud seed beetle

Description

Bruchidius siliquastri is a beetle from the family Chrysomelidae, primarily associated with Cercis siliquastrum (Redbud/Judas tree). It was first described in southern France and is believed to have originated in China. This species is now widely distributed across Europe, including France, Hungary, Slovakia, Belgium, Spain, etc. and has also been reported in Asia and North America. Adult beetles lay eggs on the pods of Cercis siliquastrum. Upon hatching, the larvae burrow into the seeds, consuming their contents. The lifecycle is closely tied to the development of the pods.

The damage caused by B. siliquastri primarily impacts seed viability, making it a concern for ornamental cultivars of the genus Cercis. Although this beetle does not directly damage the vegetative parts of the tree, heavy infestations can reduce the reproductive potential of the host tree.

Symptom

Infested pods show small circular exit holes where adult beetles emerge. Seeds inside are hollowed out, often with visible frass. Pods may appear shriveled or discolored.
