Brachyderes suturalis

Weevil Brachyderes suturalis

Description

Brachyderes suturalis is a small weevil species that primarily feeds on pine trees (Pinus halepensis, Pinus pinaster) and also on rockrose (Cistus ladanifer). The larvae develop at the roots of these plants, while adults are commonly found feeding on the needles. This weevil is native to the western Mediterranean region, with established populations in France, Portugal, and Spain. In recent years, its range has expanded northward along the European coast. Adults of Brachyderes suturalis are typically active from May to August. Overwintering adults have been observed under bark and stones. While it is mostly associated with pines, it has occasionally been found on other plants such as Cytisus or Genista species.

Symptom

Infestations result in needle damage caused by adult feeding, as well as root damage by larvae, which can weaken the plant's overall health and growth, particularly in young pines.
