Biorhiza pallida
Oak apple gall wasp
Description
Wingless females (asexual generation) hatch in early spring, already in February. They lay eggs on twigs even at a temperature of around 0º C. When laying eggs, they give rise to the creating of a specific potato-like gall. In the gall live together several larvae. In summer, the larvae pupate inside the gall. Males and females (some of them winged, the other ones wingless) of the sexual generation hatch in July. After mating, the females lay eggs on oak roots where the asexual generation is developed in 5 mm long red crown galls.
Symptom
A spongy formation on a twig in which several larvae live.
