Asterodiaspis ilicicola
Scale insect Asterodiaspis ilicicola
Description
Asterodiaspis ilicicola is a scale insect belonging to the superfamily Coccoidea, primarily infesting holm oaks (Quercus ilex) and related species such as Q. coccifera, Q. rotundifolia, and Q. suber. Native to the Palearctic region, it is widely distributed in southern Europe, including Greece, Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Turkey, and Croatia. It resides on the upper surfaces of holm oak leaves, beneath a pale, translucent, waxy blister-like covering measuring 1.5–2.0 mm in diameter.
This pest spreads during its early larval stage, which is mobile, enabling it to infest new leaves. High infestations lead to significant damage, including reduced leaf vitality, the appearance of black spots, and premature leaf drop. While the pest primarily affects the aesthetic appearance of trees, severe infestations can compromise the vitality of the tree, making it a significant threat in areas where holm oaks dominate, particularly the Iberian Peninsula.
Symptom
Infested leaves exhibit small, pale blisters resembling galls on their upper surfaces. These blisters are waxy and stick to the leaf. Severely affected leaves develop black spots, dry out, and fall prematurely.
