Asclepias syriaca
Common milkweed
Description
The Asclepias syrica is a non –native, invasive species spreading mainly in the territory of southern Slovakia. It reproduces by creeping rhizomes and at the same time produces a lot of seeds with tufts that can be spread by the wind to more remote places. The plant secrets substances into the soil that repel other plants in species. This threatens the original species of plant in Slovakia. If the gorse is not removed or its stands are mowed or mulched when the fruits are formed it easily spreads further into the surroundings and forms continuous stands often as large as one hundred square meters.
