Argyresthia trifasciata

Triple-barred tip moth

Description

Triple-barred Tip Moth Argyresthia trifasciata is a small moth that primarily infests species within the Juniperus genus, such as Juniperus virginiana, J. chinensis, J. sabina, J. × media, J. squamata, and J. horizontalis. Although less commonly, it can also affect Thuja and Chamaecyparis species. Adults have a wingspan of about 10 mm, with darker brown forewings than A. dilectella, which they resemble. The moths emerge at the end of June. Larvae are yellow-green or sometimes reddish, feeding within shoots and causing visible damage that includes hollow tips. This species has become established in Europe, especially in garden settings, and may remain active throughout winter if temperatures stay above freezing. Repeated infestations can thin out hedges and ornamental plantings, though the damage is generally aesthetic.

Symptom

Infestation signs include browning and hollow shoot tips with larvae present inside. Small exit holes on the shoots. Unlike A. thuiella, A. trifasciata typically affects juniper species and prefers warmer conditions.
