Aphis farinosa

Small willow aphid

Description

The small willow aphid is common species on willows, especially on goat willow (Salix caprea). There are several developmental stages in the colony, which are colored green, yellow-green or orange. Adults are black. The small willow aphid collonies are often (nearly always) attended by ants. The aphids can reduce the aesthetic value of willows grown for ornamental purposes, or aphids may increase the risk of fungal diseases (there are reported viral transmission by Aphis farinosa causing leaf deformations and forking) and reduce growth intensity in willows plantations grown for biomass production.

Symptom

A two-colored colony of aphids on the underside of leaves or on shoots. Often (nearly always) attended by ants.
