Description

Anoxia australis is a beetle in the Scarabaeidae family, widely distributed across southern and central Europe. The adults primarily feed on foliage of different trees, while the larvae, which develop in the soil, target roots of various woody plants and grasses. This beetle prefers warm, sandy habitats where it can be found on a range of trees and shrubs, including oaks, pines, and occasionally ornamental plants. Feeding damage is generally not severe, but when populations are high, adults can cause significant defoliation, impacting the aesthetic appearance of ornamental plants and lovering the general vigor of the trees. The larvae, on the other hand, can damage root systems, potentially affecting plant vitality, especially in younger or stressed trees.

Symptom

Leaves show signs of irregular defoliation, with edges and surfaces eaten away. In the soil, roots may appear chewed or partially damaged, potentially stunting growth in affected plants.
