Andricus hungaricus

Gall wasp Andricus hungaricus

Description

Only asexual generation is known. Unilocular, more or less globular gall up to 40 mm in diameter, covered in small irregularl bumps. This is the largest and heaviest cynipid gall in Central Europe. When mature the galls fall from the tree, and larvae overwinter in the leaf litter. Heavy infestation can block many buds and can cause sparsing crown even on older trees. This gall is the type longest known for its tannin content (17.3-20.5 %). It occurs in oak forest, parks and gardens. Adults hatch in spring.
