Aecidium clematidis
Rust Aecidium clematidis
Description
Aecidium clematidis is a rust fungus that parasitizes Clematis species, especially Clematis vitalba, C. cirrhosa and C. recta. It is a monophagous pathogen from the family Ranunculaceae, mostly occurring in southern and central Europe. The fungus forms bright yellow aecia on the undersides of infected leaves, sometimes also on stems. These fruiting bodies appear in yellowish or chlorotic spots, often slightly swollen and gall-like. The infection may cause aesthetic damage by distorting leaves and creating conspicuous yellow lesions. The fungus spreads via wind-dispersed spores and usually completes its life cycle on Clematis without the need for an alternate host.
Symptom
Yellowish, swollen spots with bright yellow aecia on the underside of Clematis leaves and sometimes stems.
