Acronicta megacephala
Poplar grey
Description
Acronicta megacephala is a noctuid moth developing mainly on poplars (Populus spp.), but also on willows (Salix spp.) and occasionally grey alder (Alnus incana). Adults fly at night from May to August, with one generation per year. The species overwinters in the pupal stage hidden in litter or soil. The caterpillars are dark grey with red and black markings and a distinctive pale dorsal patch. They feed openly on leaves, causing defoliation of varying intensity. The species is widespread across Europe, from lowlands to higher elevations. Infestation intensity is usually not strong, but in higher numbers the repeated defoliation can reduce the assimilation area of leaves and thus worsen the vitality and ornamental appearance of trees.
Symptom
Leaves of poplars and willows are partially eaten, with irregular holes and edges damaged by the feeding of hairy caterpillars.
