Melampsora laricis-populina
Pappelrost
Description
Towards the end of summer and in autumn, on white poplar (Populus alba) leaves are formed telia and in them teliospores. Rust at this stage overwinters on shed leaves. In spring, teliospores germinate and form basidiospores that infect larch needles. Then, spermatogonia and small stacks of orange deposits - aecia - are formed on needles. Aeciospores infect poplar leaves, where firstly are formed yellowish orange uredinia which can repeatedly infect poplar leaves in the course of summer. Later, winter spores, teliospores, are formed on leaves in dark brown to black deposits of spores - telia. Aspen leaves (P. tremula) are attacked by similar rust M. populnea. Disease on larches is not of a practical significance.
